A satire about farmers’ suicide in rural India, Peepli [Live] is produced by Aamir Khan and directed by journalist-turned-filmmaker Anusha Rizvi. The movie doesn’t boast of any popular Bollywood star but has a host of actors from theatre and even some adivasis (tribals) from the village of Bhadwai in Madhya Pradesh.

The film features actors Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghubir Yadav, Malaika Shenoy, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Nawazuddin Siddique and Vivek O Sharma.

Synopsis

Natha (Manikpuri) a poor farmer from Peepli village in the heart of rural India is about to lose his plot of land due to an unpaid government loan. A quick fix to the problem is the very same government's program that aids the families of indebted farmers who have committed suicide. As a means of survival Farmer Natha can choose to die!

His brother (Yadav) is happy to push him towards this unique 'honor' but Natha is reluctant. Local elections are around the corner and what might've been another unnoticed event turns into a 'cause celebre' with everyone wanting a piece of the action.

Political bigwigs, high-ranking bureaucrats, local henchmen and the ever-zealous media descend upon sleepy Peepli to stake their claim. The question on everyone's lips �" “Will he or Won't he?” As the mania escalates what will be the fate of Farmer Natha; nobody seems to care how he really feels?

Likewise, beneath the opulent, Austentatious, chic look of Aisha, one unsurprisingly stumbles upon a gem of a story flimsily told. About 200 years after it first took life on paper from the ever productive pen of Jane Austen, ‘Emma’ comes to life once again (Hollywood has already done it) on the silver screen in director Rajshree Ojha’s film Aisha, starring Sonam Kapoor as its titular protagonist. Set in the high society of Delhi, it’s the story of a rich, privileged girl with truckloads of designer costumes, lots of free time and an irrepressible fixation to play cupid between people who would rather be happy left alone. Aisha (Sonam) is surrounded by a bunch of friends who patronize her, pamper her, irritate her, peeve her, drool over her and also become a vocation for her. There’s Arjun (Abhay Deol), an investment banker, who keeps giving Aisha reality checks and is the source of unending annoyance and irritation for her. There’s the spunky Pinky (Ira Dubey), Aisha’s best friend who speaks out her mind without being obsequious. There’s the small-town girl Shefali (Amrita Puri) who’s come to Delhi to get married. Aisha takes her under her wing and tries to fix up her match with possible suitors, including Randhir Gambhir (Cyrus Sahukar) the son of a mithai baron. There’s the charming Dhruv (Arunoday Singh), a London-returned hunk for whom Aisha develops a liking. And then, there’s Aarti (Lisa Haydon), a gorgeous, sexy chick who is a close friend of Arjun, but an object of jealousy for Aisha. The first half of the film whooshes past in character introductions and also the matchmaking antics of the eponymous heroine. Aisha’s a breeze of fresh air. Her eye always on the lookout for opposite genders to make a match with. And Sonam, with her affected mannerisms, is perfectly suited to play the part. They way she simpers, puckers up her face or raises a brow has every hint of the superficiality of high class gentry. To that effect, Sonam performs well. The second half of the film becomes somewhat a mess when the castle of Aisha’s creation comes crumbling down like a house of cards and the relationships go kaput. The track between Arjun and Aarti (Abhay and Lisa) and Aisha and Dhruv (Sonam and Arunoday) isn’t as perky as could have been and the jealousy pangs that the two lead stars get out of it aren’t really plausible. In fact, the film’s pace slackens but the proceedings do speed up again after Aisha does soul searching and realizes her love for Arjun.

Shilpa chills out in London

Mumbai, July 9 (IANS) After finishing all her assignments here, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is off to London for a month's break.

'Landed in London...Love the summers here, weather is beautiful. Heading towards home sweet home now. So looking forward to this one month break,' Shilpa posted on her Twitter account.
The actress, who is married to London-based businessman Raj Kundra, has a house in Weybridge in Surrey, southeast of London.

Amitabh to work with Balki again?
He gave an award-winning performance as a progeric child in R. Balakrishnan's (Balki) hit film 'Paa' and now Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan is planning to work with him again.
'Sitting with RBalki is always a refreshing experience and this evening we talked of so many issues and so many film possibilities and so many stories that need to be made.
'He narrated four-five ideas and they were all fantastic. Problem is which one to start, and start first,' Amitabh posted on his blog.
Amitabh worked with Balki in 'Paa' and 'Cheeni Kum'.

Sameer Soni turns scriptwriter
Actor Sameer Soni, who was recently seen in Karan Johar's 'I Hate Luv Storys', has scripted a film.
'I have written a script for a film. In fact I had also gone to meet Karan Johar to take his view on it. When I narrated it, he quite liked it and said that I should direct it. But nothing concrete is in place regarding that matter till now,' Sameer told IANS.
When asked whether he plans to quit acting and get into direction or scriptwriting, he responded: 'Acting is my passion, I can never leave it. Yes, if someone likes this script and decides to produce it, then I would love to direct it. But I will not leave acting for anything.'
In the past, Sameer has been seen in films like 'Baghban' and 'Fashion'.

No Whiskers, Says Johnny Boy

It's a hair splitting issue. Over a thatch of hair above the upper lip, that is. John Abraham essays a cop in Vipul Shah's untitled venture, a remake of the Tamil winner 'Kaakha Kaakha'. The flick centres around a posse of police officers, all experts in battling organized crime.

And in keeping with the macho and scruffy 'look' required, Johnny Boy has been asked to show up with a stubble and… moustache.

Stubble's fine, avers J. Abbs who did sport it to gud effect in 'Jism'. The moustache, however, is a sore factor as Johnny Boy feels that he won't be able to pull it off! Meanwhile, JA has been working out to bulk up and display a more 'tougher' look.

Incidentally, Surya and Venkatesh, both sported whiskers in the Tamil and Telugu versions, respectively.

As the flick sets to roll in May, the hunky star needs to make up his starry mind. States Shah in a tabloid chat, "We are having a look test soon and will finalise the 'look' after that."
Quite a prickly issue. Hah, quite so.

Ram Gopal Varma returns to gangster plot

Ram Gopal Varma is back to doing what he does best. The filmmaker is busy readying the plot of his upcoming gangster film, a subject that no one can attempt better than him.Ram Gopal is active on two fronts at the moment. While his horror film PHOONK 2 is all set to unleash its scare factor, the filmmaker is secretly readying his gangster film which has been titled DEPARTMENT.
Sharing details of his films exclusively, the filmmaker says, "DEPARTMENT will explore the long spoken about subject between police and the underworld. The nexus has been attempted in many films but not as convincingly and as real as DEPARTMENT dares to do. I'm still getting the script ready and the star will be decided soon."
With this film, RGV will return to gangster genre after making highly successful ones earlier like SATYA and COMPANY. Now, that the master is getting ready with his most loved subject, let's expect fireworks in the making.

Saat Khoon Maaf' will be a unique film: Priyanka

Mumbai, April 7 (IANS) Priyanka Chopra has just started shooting for director Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Saat Khoon Maaf' and says it will be a different movie.
'It's too early to speak about 'Saat Khoon Maaf' but it will be a very unique film for sure,' Priyanka told reporters here Tuesday after launching the denim brand Levi's Change your World campaign at Grand Hyatt hotel.

Commenting upon the reports that she rejected Hollywood offers for 'Saat Khoon Maaf', she said: 'I can associate only with the film I am committed to and I was committed to Vishal Bharadwaj....'

Priyanka was more than happy to collaborate with Bharadwaj again after 'Kaminey'.

'To work with Vishal again is a great opportunity because I think he is one of India's most celebrated filmmakers. He has shown confidence in me, so I feel a bit nervous and anxious as well.'

Based on Ruskin Bond's story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands' about a femme fatale who bumps off her seven spouses, 'Saat Khoon Maaf' also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan.

Priyanka, who replaces actor Akshay Kumar as a brand ambassador of Levi's and even as the host of the reality show 'Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi'', describes it as a sheer coincidence.

'I would say it's a complete coincidence,' said Priyanka who is looking forward to hosting the adventure reality show. 'I am very excited about 'Khatron Ke Khiladi' because it's a perfect show for me. I have seen its last two seasons. It was one of my favourite shows. It would be so much fun to actually host the show.'

I'm not directing any film: Lara Dutta

New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) Bollywood actress Lara Dutta has shot down reports that she's set to don the director's hat.
'I'm NOT directing anything right now guys! Not equipped to do so! Maybe quite a few years from now. In the meantime happy in front of the camera,' she wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Reports suggested that Lara was planning to direct an independent film and has been working on the script for two years. The film was said to go on floors by July.

Meanwhile Lara is busy promoting her new film 'Housefull' that also stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Jiah Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Arjun Rampal.

The film is about a man named Arush played by Akshay Kumar who gets caught in crazy situations all because he has a deep secret - he has three wives. It will release April 30.

Rambha gets ready for D-day!

Popular South Indian actress Rambha will marry Canada-based businessman Indhiran Padmanathan on April 8 in Tirupathi. The ceremony is planned as a complete family affair and a grand reception will be held in Chennai on April 11. A grand engagement party was held by Rambha at Hotel Park Sheraton in Chennai on January 27. The latest buzz is that the actress has decided to continue acting after her marriage. "I will continue my profession till I feel bored. After that, I will help Indiran in his business. But I have made a decision to act only in meaningful roles. The films I accept henceforth should add value to my career," she said. On her wedding plans, she said, "The marriage will take place in Tirupathi on April 8. Nandana: How can I justify censoring myself?

How do you avoid a superiority complex when you have a dad who is invited by Barack Obama for dinner?
I’m tremendously proud of both my parents, but my sense of self-worth is entirely independent of them both. I’ve never believed in reflected glory — it’s always been a priority for me to make my own way. Since childhood, I’ve been a pretty confident girl and willing to take chances. I’m sure both of them had a lot to do with instilling that courage and self-assurance in me. But I’m not the kind of person who would ever have a superiority complex.

Considering that your Rang Rasiya and another film — Makara Manju — deal with the life of Raja Ravi Varma, does competition bother you?
Not at all. I know that Rang Rasiya is extraordinary and absolutely unlike any other film. Secondly, I’ve always been very positive as a person — it takes a lot for me to feel insecure. I am vulnerable only when it comes to the people I love. Nothing else in the world — neither the competition nor the glitz — is important enough to get stressed, is it?

Recently, an article mentioned that Kareena Kapoor had wanted the lovemaking scenes from Kurbaan deleted from the print that was meant for her mom. Did you ever harbour such thoughts about the daring scenes of yours from Rang Rasiya?
Not even for a second did I feel that way. I’m proud of Ketan Mehta’s important and outstanding film, and loved playing Sugandha. But yes, there is one moment in the film in which the muse inspires the artist by posing for him. I am quite a private and shy girl and so, making the decision to accept the role was difficult. In fact, the biggest help in making that decision came from my family — both my parents felt that the scene in question is the emotional and political heart of the story (the Censor Board agreed!) and that the film would not be true to itself without it. In a film dealing with censorship, how can I justify censoring myself? So, by the time I did the scene, I was fully in character. I was not the shy girl Nandana, but the iconoclast Sugandha, who broke all the rules of her time by the sheer power of her extraordinary courage and conviction. Why would I wish to hide any aspect of Sugandha’s personality?
